Arguably the most famous park in the world, Central Park was designed in 1858 by landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux as a leisure space for all busy New Yorkers. It’s a great escape for unwinding from the excitement of ‘the city that never sleeps’. New Yorkers and tourists enjoy walking, jogging, cycling, relaxing, a game of baseball or cricket, rowing, skating or lunch at the lovely Boathouse cafe. Kids can enjoy themselves at the playground, merry-go-round, the Central Park Zoo, or sail a boat on the Conservatory Water. The Park offers unique scenery all year round and has been the backdrop for hundreds of movies. Little commemorative signs on the park’s benches, saying things like ‘For Anna, who loved Central Park so much,’ remind you of the fact that everything in the park has been donated by New York residents over the years. Runners are everywhere, especially when the New York City Marathon approaches; running alone or in groups, mostly along the Reservoir. And then there are the ‘dog walkers’, walking 10 dogs at the time for busy Upper East and West Side dog-owners living around Central Park. If you take into account the amount of dogs walked in the park it’s surprisingly clean. This may have a lot to do with NYC’s high fines for ‘dog-waste’.
