Around 1900 the Meatpacking District was a booming industrial area: 250 meat-processing companies such as slaughterhouses and distributaries were located here. However, decline started in the 1960s till 80s when the area became a center for drug-dealing and prostitution. A turning-point came in the 1990s when high-end boutiques, designer shops, trendy restaurants and exquisite clubs settled in the area. In 2004, the Meatpacking District was named the most fashionable New York neighborhood by New York Magazine. The area comes alive at night, although it has become somewhat of a tourist area. Our tip: Go where the locals go and have a bite at The Standard Grill or Pastis, sip a cocktail at Top of the Standard, and dance the night away at nightclub Le Bain. Recently, in 2009, one of the old elevated railroad tracks was turned into the fantastic High Line Park, offering great views of neighborhood and the Hudson River. And in May 2015 the Whitney Museum opens here after a move from the Upper East Side, giving a nice arty touch to the neighborhood.
